Portobello Vegan Trattoria

For date night, Andy and I decided to try out Portobello. We didn’t make a reservation and showed up around 6:35. Although there were 3 empty tables and several spots at the bar, we were told it would be 20 minutes. So we left our phone number and headed next door for a beer at Beer Mongers.

After 25 minutes, the host came to let us know our space at the bar was ready. What? We waited 25 minutes for a spot at the bar? I gritted my teeth and chose to go with it.

The menu was pretty good considering it was a vegan joint. They had the usual beet burger and marinated portobello burger. But they also had pizza. How do you do vegan pizza? They used cashew cream instead of cheese. I grabbed the ‘cheesy’ pizza and Andy got the pepperoni pizza that was made with seitan.

Andy’s pizza was better than mine. And I definitely had food envy. The service was pretty inattentive considering that there were more than enough servers. What really irritated me was that one of the tables that was free when we first showed up never had anyone seated at it the entire time we were there. And there were people waiting!

If Portland was a tiny town with only a few restaurants, then I might be okay with the experience. But Portland is filled with great restaurants. So I won’t go back.

  1. Isn’t it frustrating? Their food is really good but the service leaves a lot to be desired. And we’ve also run into the empty table issue. Even worse is when you get there and stand in line for 30 minutes before they open and then when they do open they only seat 3 of the parties that were in line (you’re the fourth) b/c all of the rest of the tables are reserved. Very poor management.
